Newark
The River Trent flows through the small town of Newark, aka Newark upon Trent.
Newark grew up around Newark Castle (now in ruins) and its large marketplace (now attractively lined with historic buildings). It is a pleasant town in which to live and work, with good transport links to nearby Nottingham and London. The scenic River Trent runs through the west of town making it easy for residents to take to the towpaths and walk to work or to the train station. Fitness fanatics can skip the gym and enjoy some fresh air instead with a riverside jog – and for those more inclined to enjoy views of the water in a relaxed fashion, several pubs are just a stone’s throw from the river.
The town itself is an extremely interesting place to wander around with its narrow, cobbled streets and impressive architecture with many royal and literacy connections.
The Market Square holds lively markets five days a week or you could try and catch one of the popular Nottinghamshire Farmers Market held every 1st Wednesday of the month at Market Place. Newark is also home to Europe’s biggest antiques and collectors fair, held 6 times a year and the Newark Air Museum which houses over 58 aircrafts and cockpits.
The Newark riverside has seen extensive regeneration work in recent years and now offers peaceful and relaxing walks along the towpath for visitors. There are also a wide range of delis, bars, restaurants and tea rooms just a stones throw from the river.
A short walk from the lock is Riverside Park a popular place for a picnic overlooked by the dramatic 12th Century Newark Castle.
