The Antonine Wall
Lowlands
From Craigmarloch you can visit the Antonine Wall at Croy Hill. The Forth & Clyde Canal follows much of the Wall's route, which made up the north west frontier of the Roman Empire from 142AD.
During construction, the canal was cut through the Antonine Wall at Cadder, uncovering many Roman artefacts. The Wall is a huge earth bank fronted by a ditch, and topped by a turf and timber palisade. Behind it forts and mile castles were spaced out across the country to control the locals!
