Limehouse Basin

London's canal port since 1820, Limehouse Basin is still a hive of activity today.

Situated in Stepney, east London, Limehouse is the easternmost link between the Regent's Canal and the tidal River Thames. The basin connects with both the Regent's Canal (part of the Grand Union system) and the Limehouse Cut, an access point to the Lee Navigation. Originally built to accommodate barge traffic from the canal network, the basin was enlarged in the early 1800s to accommodate sea-going craft.

Today, Limehouse Basin - like so much of London's Docklands - is home to new glass-and-steel apartment blocks offering the benefits of loft living and a view over water. However, the location retains much of its character and there is a 90-berth marina in the Basin. Pubs line the entrance from the River Thames, offering excellent views over the tideway.

On a typical day at Limehouse, you'll see narrowboats from the canal system tackling the tidal Thames - looking quite out of proportion to the wide river - as well as sea-going motor cruisers, traditional Thames sailing craft, and commercial barges on the tideway.
