Northwich
Home to the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal, Northwich was famous for salt mining throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, it is still celebrated - but the main attraction is undoubtedly Edwin Clarke’s innovative boat lift.
Head to the Anderton Boat Lift and see some true history in action. The lift was originally built in 1875 and still performs the important task of transporting boats between the Trent & Mersey Canal and the River Mersey. Take a turn on the trip boat and learn more about the ‘Cathedral of the Canals’ in the visitor centre.
After an eye-opening time at the boat lift, make your way to the welcoming Stanley Arms where you can enjoy a leisurely drink and perhaps something from the extensive menu. Also on the waterfront, you will find the popular Wharf restaurant serving tasty home cooked food. Or perhaps the traditional Bowling Green is more your thing, with many guest ales for you to sample – thoroughly deserved after an brisk walk along the Weaver.
