Foxton Locks achieves European recognition
25th Nov 2008
Roger Helmer MEP will be unveiling the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) plaque on Friday 28 November 2008 at Foxton Locks.
ERIH plaques mark prestigious sites that have made a major contribution to industrial heritage and now offer sustainable centres as visitor attractions.
Jeff Whyatt, General Manager for British Waterways South East welcomed the guests and commented that: “We are delighted that the work of the Foxton Locks Partnership at Foxton Locks has been recognised by the European Route of Industrial Heritage; this is an exciting link to the many waterways of Europe that have been recognised by ERIH.”
Paul Gilman, ERIH representative said: “On behalf of the ERIH partners I am delighted to see the work that has been undertaken at Foxton Locks and hope that the links with ERIH will raise awareness of the site to visitors from across the UK and oversees.”
Paul explained the original concept of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) – a network of industrial heritage sites across Europe where the long-term sustainability of the sites is a priority. “Since the official launch in 2005, the European Route of Industrial Heritage has moved from concept to reality; I wish you every success.”
Roger Helmer, MEP said: “I am hugely impressed by the restoration work already achieved at Foxton. It is a delightful place to visit. I hope very much that the dream of reinstating the lift on the inclined plane will be fulfilled.”
