Walking along the Caledonian Canal
The area around the Caledonian Canal is excellent walking country. Fort William and Lochaber – considered the outdoor capital of the UK - boasts some of Scotland’s finest mountains, with Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, overlooking the entrance to the canal at Corpach.
The Great Glen Way is one of four official long distance walking routes in Scotland. At 73 miles, the route stretches along the Great Glen from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east. The routes traverses the country’s greatest geological fault and follows sections of the Caledonian Canal and forestry tracks through some of the Highlands' most beautiful scenery and alongside Loch Ness.
For those of us who are less adventurous, there are many shorter walks along the canal towpath, and there are opportunities to do small sections of the Great Glen Way in bite-size chunks. There are also many forest walks around the canal.
