Bassenthwaite Lake

Bassenthwaite Lake is 4 miles long, about three quarters of a mile wide and 70ft deep, making it one of the largest yet one of the shallowest of the lakes here. It's also the most northerly, and is very popular for sailing.

Tennyson spent a great deal of time at Mirehouse and it's believed that he wrote the majority of his famous poem - 'Morte d'Arthur' - here.

Bassenthwaite is owned by the Lake District National Park Authority.
