Holiday guide - Broads
The Broads are a world apart: a boater’s paradise boasting over 125 miles of tranquil waterways, quaint market towns and flourishing wildlife. This unique area is home to some of the rarest plants and animals in the UK, a haven for wildlife lovers, walkers and anyone who enjoys spending time in England’s verdant countryside.
As well as six rivers, there are over 40 broads (or shallow lakes) in Norfolk and Suffolk. Windmills and country houses pepper the sweeping landscape – otherwise a restful expanse of grazing marshes and winding watercourses.
Boating on the Broads is addictive, as the amount of vessels navigating the bustling River Bure in the height of summer will testify. Variety is the spice of life here; as well as main line rivers (such as the Thurne, Bure and quiet Waveney) a number of intriguing dykes, meres and lakes are just asking to be explored. Hire bases abound, with several conveniently located around Wroxham.
But it’s not all about sailing serenely through the countryside. Adventurous types can try their hand at kayaking, powerboating, jet skiing and various other watersports at the many dedicated centres dotted around the Broads. The historic city of Norwich offers no less than two splendid cathedrals, a castle, specialist shops and numerous pubs and restaurants, and the attractive towns of Loddon and Beccles promise to charm anyone in search of a taste of ‘Olde Englande.’
Walkers also find much to challenge and delight them in the Broads. 190 miles of footpaths weave through attractive scenery with routes ranging from gentle circular walks to long distance hikes. Explore the northern part of the Broads on the Weavers’ Way or take the Angles Way and discover the River Waveney.
Fancy travelling at a faster speed? Winding country lanes with gentle inclines make the Broads perfect for exploration by bike, with numerous shops and local boat yards offering bikes for hire by the day or half day. Route maps are also available free of charge.
