Adelphi Canal

A long-lost Derbyshire canal, the Adelphi's prime cargo was cannonballs!

The Adelphi Canal was a privately-owned half-mile waterway that formed part of the Adelphi Ironworks, near Chesterfield. It was filled by water pumped out of the nearby mines.

Cargoes of cannonballs would have started their journey on the canal; been transhipped to road trucks for the journey to nearby Staveley; then loaded into boats again on the Chesterfield Canal - perhaps not the most efficient transport system.
